Opening Plenary - teen climate activists with Claudia Ruitenberg

Claudia Ruitenberg is Professor in the Department of Educational Studies at the University of British Columbia. Her teaching and scholarship are in the area of philosophy of education, with a special emphasis on ethics and political theory. She is currently teaching a graduate seminar on Philosophical Debates in Environmental Education. She is author of Unlocking the World: Education in an Ethic of Hospitality (2015), as well as numerous articles and chapters. She is also co-editor of Education, Culture and Epistemological Diversity: Mapping a Disputed Terrain (2012), and editor of (among other titles) Reconceptualizing Study in Educational Discourse and Practice (2017). Born and raised in The Netherlands, she now lives in Vancouver and on Salt Spring Island.

Rebecca Hamilton  is a grade 12 student and an organizer with sustainabiliteens, the teen climate strike movement in Vancouver, working towards intersectional climate justice and democratic education.

Emma-Jane Burian  Is a grade 12 student and a climate activist who organizes Global and monthly climate strikes with Our Earth, Our Future on the beautiful homelands of the Lekwugen and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples in Victoria BC. She has been a member of the City of Victoria Youth Council, and has participated in organizing community initiatives like Meatless Monday Potlucks and advocating for fare-free transit for youth in her region. She also serves as a director on the Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke Green Party EDA. She is passionate about climate justice, and engaging youth in politics, to build resilient and strong communities for a better world.

Zoe SCHURMAN is a 14-year old climate activist from Seattle, WA. She strikes on Fridays, and has helped plan the Seattle sister strikes of of past global climate strikes. At the moment, she mainly organizes with Fridays For Future and Climate Action Families, but, in the past, she's worked with many more groups. She loves making art, writing, and organizing within her community!
