Keynote:
Mercedes Martínez, President of FMPR
|
Mercedes is a dynamic young union leader, leading Puerto Rican teachers in the fight to defend public education in Puerto Rico. After the devastation of hurricane Maria in 2016, the government moved fast to bring in a privatization scheme, neglecting to reopen schools, taking advantage of the devastation to try to enact the "shock doctrine" in Puerto Rico. Teachers and parents fought back, clearing debris and demanding that their communities’ schools be opened! And they succeeded! This is a rare chance to hear directly from a leader who is on the front line of a movement to defend public education, facing storms both literal and political!

Playnote:
Queer as Funk
Queer As Funk is a cover band - we play music that we love, as an homage to the amazing artists that inspire us, and we are very privileged to do so. We are indebted to these musicians, to their struggle, their talent, their stories.
We believe visibility is important, and as a predominantly queer-identifying band, part of our mandate is to lift each other up, and to be a compassionate voice for our community.
Queer As Funk is grateful for the opportunity to share our love of this music with you.
"There's nowt so queer as folk", or so the old English adage goes. Queer As Funk believes in celebrating differences, and what better way than with a big ol' dance party?
